iC-MP: 8-bit HALL encoder with linear output 17.07.2008
Angular position sensor with serial interface
The iC-MP is a space saving system-on-chip solution for sensing an absolute angular position.
In combination with a diametric magnetized permanent magnet the iC-MP represents a robust absolute and incremental encoder with 1.4° resolution. The tiny 4 mm x 4 mm QFN28 package contains the integrated Hall sensors with signal amplifier and gain control, an A/D converter to transfer the 8-bit digital data into a linear ramp plus a serial interface.

The typical applications of the iC-MP can be found in the industrial and automotive field, such as:

Potentiometer replacement
Manual or automatic actuators
Position control and aquisition
Absolute rotating angle measurement

The linear output can be programmed for the rotating direction and for angular ranges of 90°, 180°, 270° or 360°. The output swing is rail-to-rail, but can be set to 10% to 90% of the supply voltage to distinguish failure by short circuit of the output line to ground or to the supply voltage.
For data transfer and programming, a serial interface is integrated as well. The configuration settings are programmed into the on-chip nonvolatile OTP-ROM.
The automatic gain control compensates variation in the Hall signal strength caused by temperature or magnet distance changes. A magnet field below the specified value generates an error signal for diagnosis purpose.
For sensing multiple axes, multiple iC-MP devices can be cascaded. Their position data is read either via the serial interface or over the common analog line, with only one device active at a time, reducing the power consumption. The iC-MP operates with a +5 V (±10%) supply voltage in an ambient temperature range of -40 to +125° C.
